I’m pretty sure every computer user on the planet should have a dropbox account. DropBoxĮveryone here knows about DropBox, right? It’s free, you get to share folders and files with people (or among all your various computers and devices). And I will be using it for far more, as its capabilities (I’m now learning) are far-reaching. I use it to type stuff that I need to insert all the time (like 4 different email signatures or long common sentences). I now use Keyboard Maestro to launch programs that I use every 5 minutes with a single shortcut. Then my friend Adam Engst told me about Keyboard Maestro, developed by early-Internet-software-master Peter N. But neither company has kept up with the times (I don’t think either one works with Mountain Lion 10.8, for example). I was a big QuicKeys user way-back-when, and more recently I had used iKey. Keyboard Maestro is a macro program - that is, it lets you make keyboard shortcuts.

We’ll follow up with a Windows utilities blog post soon. Yes, I am primarily Mac-based, and these are the tools that I use every day. We’ve discussed plug-ins and scripts for years, but I just have to take a moment here to give a shout out to several pieces of Mac OS software that I love. Added TotalFinder menu into Finder main menu item (for people who remove TotalFinder's menubar icon).InDesign is awesome, but it doesn’t live in a vacuum! You can’t really be efficient in InDesign (or any other program) if you don’t take advantage of how other software can help you get your work done. Improved window dragging via Finder's toolbar or statusbar. Removed random flickering in multi-display setups (issue). Escape key could stop working when closed last tab in Visor window. CMD+W does not close whole window in case there is only one tab in dual mode. Clicking Finder icon in the Dock brings back miniaturized window (issue). Visor window is correctly repositioned after connecting or disconnecting external display. Cut/Copy/Paste buttons appear in context menus also when clicking into Finder's background. Double-clicking Finder's toolbar miniaturizes whole window. Focus Visor when clicked the Dock icon while having opened unfocused pinned Visor (issue). Fixed redrawing issues under high CPU load (issue). Fixed broken paste command in context menus (issue). Fixed: It is now possible to copy UNC-style paths from Copy Path submenu.

New: Compatibility with Finder 10.8.2 (which is included in OS X update 10.8.3) Implemented "Reopen Closed Tab" (idea). Added TotalFinder menu into Finder main menu item (for people who remove TotalFinder's menubar icon).

TotalFinder is a remarkably useful Finder extension for managing your folders and files more effectively. However, it does come with an uninstaller to make sure everything is removed if you don't want to keep it.

TotalFinder buries itself deep into your operating system in order to integrate with Finder so you can't remove it properly by simply dragging it to the Trash. TotalFinder cleverly instructs Finder to hide them meaning that although they are still created, they'll never bother you again. Another useful feature is the ability to get rid of pesky DS_Store files that litter your system.
